Wrapping Up 2024

My 2024 began with a mix of highs and lows. Despite an early setback in January, when my small coffee business unfortunately went bankrupt, I gained invaluable lessons about entrepreneurship – lessons that I know will serve me well in the future. February brought a fresh start with a new job, a new challenge, and a wealth of new learning experiences. This role has given me a real sense of fulfillment, as I have the opportunity to educate and teach others. I even had the chance to travel to our out-of-town branch, adding another exciting dimension to my work.

However, 2024 also brought profound pain. In April, my father became ill, succumbing to complications from long-term illnesses including diabetes and hypertension. Witnessing his suffering over the weeks that followed was incredibly difficult and stressful for our entire family. On May 5th, God finally called him home, releasing him from his pain. This experience taught me invaluable lessons about life, death, and the importance of cherishing every moment. I find comfort in knowing that Papa is now in a better place with the Lord.

The losses didn’t end there. Just months after my father’s passing, my aunt also became ill, followed by my uncle. Losing three siblings in such a short period has been deeply painful. We find solace in believing they are together and watching over us. I’ve come to see these difficult times as a “pruning” process orchestrated by God. While incredibly painful, I believe these experiences are preparing us for what lies ahead.

Amidst the grief, 2024 also brought some incredible opportunities. I had my first international travel experience, attending the Canton Fair in China. It was an exciting, albeit stressful and tiring, adventure. Immersing myself in Chinese culture, experiencing the food, and observing their way of life was eye-opening. Seeing firsthand how developed China is compared to the Philippines was truly remarkable.

My professional life has also continued to grow. I’m grateful to be part of my current company. Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and with varying personalities has been a practical lesson in psychology. The concepts I’ve read about in books, articles, and watched in videos have finally come to life through my interactions with colleagues.

And speaking of colleagues, 2024 also brought me a wonderful gift: I found my people. I connected with a small group of friends, each with distinct personalities, but with one hilarious common denominator: a shared love of pranking each other. They’re incredibly funny, and because there’s a bit of a gap in our ages, they sometimes make innocent blunders without even realizing it. It’s all in good fun, and I try to let them navigate their own experiences, both in life and in their careers. I cherish these friendships and accept their quirks, knowing that they accept me for who I am—or at least, I hope they do! Haha.

I wouldn’t have survived 2024 without my incredibly strong support system, my “other half of the sky,” Loren Marquez. She has been there through everything—the happiest moments and the saddest, most difficult times of my life. I’ve survived every year because of her unwavering guidance and support. She has kept me afloat during times when I felt like giving up and quitting life altogether. Thank you, Lors! I cannot imagine my life without you anymore.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m filled with positivity and a desire to continue learning and growing. I have big dreams and plans, and I’m eager to pursue them. Despite the hardships and stress that 2024 brought, I’m deeply thankful for all the experiences, both good and bad. They have shaped me into the person I am today and have prepared me for the future.

Seeking First the Kingdom

Dear God,

Your word in Matthew 6:33 reminds me to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Help me to live by this truth today. Guide my heart to prioritize your will and your ways above all else. I trust that as I seek your kingdom, you will provide for all my needs.

In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Thought Questions:

1. What does it practically look like for me to “seek first the kingdom of God” in my daily life?

2. How can I better align my priorities with God’s righteousness?

3. In what areas of my life am I struggling to trust God’s provision, and how can I surrender those worries to Him?

The Unexpected Gift of Failure: Finding Purpose in the Detours

Introduction:

Recently, I shared a TedEd video with my partner about overcoming mistakes. It deeply resonated with her after facing setbacks in her career. When she asked me about my own failures, I felt a pang of discomfort. While I shared some setbacks in my trading career, I omitted a deeper truth, a truth that has haunted me for years.

It’s a truth I’ve been hesitant to share, perhaps out of shame or a bruised ego. But in writing this blog post, I aim to release that burden and share a piece of my story with my future self, and perhaps with others who can relate.

The Weight of Unspoken Failure:

I believe a man’s greatest failure is not providing for his family or failing to deliver on promises of a good life. For a long time, this belief has weighed heavily on me. I’ve felt that my decisions have held me back, leaving me lagging behind my peers. The realization of this came late, and it stung.

For years, I couldn’t shake the feeling of inadequacy. It chipped away at my confidence, making me question my every move. The weight of this unspoken failure became a silent companion, a shadow that followed me everywhere.

Finding Purpose in the Detours:

But as I wrestled with this burden, a shift began to occur. I started to see my perceived failures not as roadblocks, but as detours—unexpected paths leading me to a different destination.

Growing up, I never envisioned myself as a servant. The idea of serving others wasn’t on my radar. But now, I find contentment in serving those around me, whether it’s through my job, sharing knowledge, lending a helping hand, or simply making someone’s day a bit brighter.

A verse from the Bible resonated with me: “If you want to be first, you must be the very last, and the servant of all.” This perspective has become my guiding light, helping me focus less on my past mistakes and more on the present opportunity to serve.

Embracing a New Path:

Today, I choose to release the weight of my past failures. I will no longer dwell on what could have been or compare myself to others. Instead, I’ll wake up each morning with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to serve and bless those around me.

My journey is far from over, and I know there will be more challenges ahead. But I’m no longer afraid of failure. I see it as a teacher, a guide that shapes me into the person I’m meant to become.

Conclusion:

We all have failures, both big and small. They are part of the human experience. But it’s how we respond to those failures that truly matters. By embracing the detours, we can find new paths, new passions, and new ways to serve others.

I encourage you, dear reader, to reflect on your own failures. What lessons have they taught you? How can you turn those experiences into opportunities for growth and service?

Remember, the greatest failure is not in falling down, but in refusing to get back up. So rise, dust yourself off, and embrace the detours. You never know where they might lead you.

My Father’s Legacy: A Tribute to a Hardworking and Dedicated Man

Introduction:

Growing up, my father was the epitome of hard work and dedication. Whether it was his job or our home, he poured his heart and soul into everything he did. Even as he entered his senior years, his energy and spirit were infectious.

But Papa’s life was also a journey of facing health challenges head-on. Despite his heart condition and numerous hospital visits, his determination never wavered. This is a tribute to my father, a man who taught me the meaning of resilience and perseverance.

As a child, I witnessed my father’s strength as he recovered from a heart attack and bypass surgery. But as the years passed, his health became a constant concern. Pneumonia, infections, diabetes, high blood pressure – each year brought a new battle. Yet, his spirit remained unbroken. He simply wouldn’t change his ways.

April 2024 marked another turning point. Papa’s condition worsened, and he was hospitalized. We faced weeks of uncertainty, watching him struggle with kidney failure and the need for dialysis. Through it all, he fought to live, his will to survive a testament to his strength.

He briefly considered returning home, but the encouragement of family spurred him to continue fighting. Yet, despite the best efforts of doctors, his condition declined. We made the difficult decision to transfer him to another hospital, hoping for a miracle.

That night, as I held my father’s hand, I silently prayed for his suffering to end. Our relationship wasn’t always the most open, but in that moment, I felt a deep connection. I knew he was tired, and I wanted him to find peace.

On May 5th, surrounded by loved ones and the comforting words of the rosary, my father took his last breath. There was sadness, but also relief that his pain was finally over.

Conclusion:

Although we didn’t always express our feelings openly, my father’s love and lessons have shaped me into the person I am today. He instilled in me a strong faith in Jesus, a love for music, and a desire to live a good and meaningful life. I will forever cherish his memory and the example he set for me and my brother. Papa, thank you for everything. You are deeply missed.

Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude: Tips for My Future Family

Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude: Tips for Families

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, it’s easy for the essence of gratitude to slip through the cracks of our daily routines. Yet, instilling an attitude of gratitude within our family units can be one of the most rewarding endeavors. Gratitude, after all, is more than just saying “thank you.” It’s about recognizing the good in our lives and acknowledging the contributions of others to our well-being. This article explores practical ways families can cultivate a genuine sense of thankfulness, transforming their interactions and overall outlook on life.

Understanding Gratitude

Gratitude goes beyond the surface level of polite gestures; it is deeply rooted in our psychology, influencing our emotional and mental health. For families, cultivating gratitude can lead to a more harmonious home environment, fostering stronger bonds and mutual respect among its members. It’s about seeing beyond our immediate desires and appreciating what we have, including the people who make our lives meaningful.

The Challenges of Fostering Gratitude

Today’s families face numerous challenges in practicing gratitude. The digital age has brought about a disconnect, with screens often taking precedence over face-to-face interactions. Additionally, a culture of instant gratification can diminish the perceived value of long-term rewards, making gratitude seem outdated or irrelevant. Yet, the benefits of overcoming these obstacles are immense, offering a pathway to a more contented and connected family life.

Practical Tips to Cultivate Gratitude

Start with Yourself: As a parent or guardian, your actions set the tone. By expressing gratitude daily and involving your family in these reflections, you create a model for your children to emulate.

Create Gratitude Rituals: Establish routines, such as sharing what you’re thankful for at dinner, to make gratitude a daily practice. A gratitude jar, filled with notes about weekly blessings, can serve as a visual reminder of your family’s fortunes.

Volunteer and Give Back: Organize family days to help at local charities. This not only benefits the community but also helps your family see the direct impact of kindness and generosity.

Encourage Expression of Appreciation: Foster an environment where family members feel valued by acknowledging everyday acts of kindness, reinforcing the importance of appreciation.

Incorporate Gratitude into Education: Introduce your children to cultural practices of gratitude and include gratitude-themed books in their reading list. This broadens their understanding and appreciation of the world around them.

Making Gratitude a Lifestyle

Adopting a lifestyle of gratitude requires patience and persistence. Challenges will arise, but the key is to stay committed and adapt practices as needed. Celebrate small victories and keep the dialogue about gratitude open and ongoing.

The Benefits of a Grateful Family

The transformative power of gratitude within a family is profound. Improved communication, deeper relationships, and an enhanced ability to cope with adversity are just a few of the benefits. Moreover, a family that practices gratitude contributes to a ripple effect, influencing their community and beyond with their positive outlook and actions.

Conclusion

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude within the family doesn’t have to be complicated. By taking small, intentional steps, you can imbue your family life with a sense of appreciation that enriches every interaction. Remember, the journey of gratitude begins with a single step—a step toward recognizing and celebrating the good in our lives and the people we share it with.

As we foster this environment within our families, we not only enhance our own lives but also set the stage for a more compassionate and understanding world. So, let’s embrace the challenge and witness the transformative power of gratitude in our families.
